Friday with Heidi: The power of words…
My Friday with Heidi routine is traditionally an inspired thought around Wednesday evening or Thursday so I can prepare it for email on Friday morning.
This week I’ve had lots on my mind and sleep has been more elusive. On Monday night I found myself wide awake and writing this week’s Friday with Heidi in my wakefulness. It’s testament to the longevity of me writing these that I don’t jump on that thought and run with it.
Whilst I think it would have been an interesting message, it wasn’t until today (Thursday afternoon) whilst doing some tidying and clearing that that I changed tack and find myself talking to you about the power of words today (funnily enough, the original subject was on the new words of 2020, but maybe we’ll get that in a week or two!).
I am a member of a weekly networking group called BNI. BNI is over 35 years old, has an impressive and heady international reach and is successful in it’s own right and for it’s members.
Like any organisation, diet, workout, community, course, financial plan these things are only ever as good as the work you personally put into them.
You’ll hear raving fans talk about BNI and how it’s changed their business and you’ll equally hear those who think it’s a waste of time.
But, like anything in life, what we put into it really amplifies what we get out.
I am currently the President of the group and run the meeting each week. One of the things I need to do is to source a positive quotation to end the meeting with to give our members something to think about.
This week I wanted a quotation to back up a discussion we had around giving more than we receive. I found this fabulous line which really made me stop and think,
“In a world like this, you pay it forward, ’cause more than likely you didn’t deserve it
when you got it the first time.” ? Mindy McGinnis
How true is that?
How powerful is it to pass a good feeling on rather than pass it back?
I read somewhere once that if someone says something nice to you or your significant other tells you they love you it’s not necessary to directly reciprocate.
Allow the words to land.
Hear them with the genuine intention they are delivered.
And say thank you.
That’s it. There’s no need to dilute their genuine compliment with one that you think you need to come up with for them.
I find when I do this the words have more meaning, they leave me feeling happier, more contented and much more likely to pass that feeling on to someone else in my day.
And as happy and lovely as you can feel receiving a really nice comment, it’s equally delightful to tell someone, genuinely and unexpectedly what you think or feel about them.
Paying it forwards spreads the power of words way more quickly than a two way exchange between two people ever can and, I reckon, we can all do with some happiness and unexpected niceties right now.
Have fun receiving gracefully and passing it forward. I’m pretty sure your weekend will be an even nicer place because of it!
Sunday Wake Up! is still a simultaneous online / outside session on Zoom and at Bearwood Recreation Ground in Winnersh. Last Sunday was the first time I had to deal with some rain whilst running the session. I am not sure it’s a perfect solution but a coat over my ‘phone and my laptop under a picnic table seemed to keep me online and transmitting without any trouble.
For now I intend to keep this combined session running so will be checking out mini tents, gazebos and rain proof coverings. Who’d a thought this would be part of my Fit Camp shopping list this year!
I’d love to help you get a regular dose of exercise with one of our sessions. Please do drop Rowena a line on admin@fasttrack-fitcamp.co.uk to find out if you’re better online or in-person and how to get involved.
We’re heading into FastTrack Fit Camp’s 11th Birthday next month, so watch this space for some competitions, give-aways and challenges!
Have a very lovely weekend.
