“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
I really like this quotation.
I could spend some time talking about who said it originally. Aristotle has been attributed mostly. It appears that it’s not him. More like a Will Durant in the 1920s. This is not what I chose to share with you today though.
The very concept of this quotation is one that can help us to make some significant changes quite simply.
If there’s an area of your life that you feel is troubled, stagnant or non-existent I’d proffer that there is something that you are repeatedly doing to create it.
Stopping to think about these things is challenging. We need to look at the bits of us that we don’t much like or don’t feel proud of. But if we can do that and see what needs to change, repeatedly, then we’ll be in a position where changes happen quickly.
And, like most weeks, as I write this I realise that I am talking to me too!
We’ve all got these little shadowy areas of our lives that could do with a spring clean at times and I am no exception.
So what are you doing repeatedly that is contributing to your weight loss goals or fitness regime. Sleep health or life / work balance.
It may be your finances, your relationship, your time management which need some new habits.
One area I noticed I wasn’t excelling in was my exercise and fitness. It doesn’t sit well with me to promote the benefits and not fully engage myself.
Last year I repeatedly walked most days and strength trained at the weekend.
This year i have repeatedly stood in front of my computer on Zoom.
You can see the problem!
I’ve changed it.
My strength training facility wasn’t able to reopen and so I joined a gym to get my weights fix.
I’ve added in a little bit of cardio at each visit and this week I’ve expanded it to a couple of runs in the week too.
I am not claiming that this is now ‘excellence’ or indeed a habit. But you’ve got to start somewhere. A habit has to have a start date and my conscience was shouting at me!
My question to you this week is where are you already excelling?
What habits are you taking for granted that allow you experience this?
What can you learn from the areas of your life where you’re succeeding that you can transfer elsewhere?
I’m off to do the same.
I’ve got some grotty areas that need some attention and some new habits. I am sure you do too.
Let me know how you get on.
I’ve updated the events page on our website this week to show our upcoming events to the end of the year.
Finally, over the next few weeks I am moving our mailing database to another provider. You don’t need to do anything, but you will find that links from previous emails will be broken once I’ve made the switch. I’ll let you know when this will be.
All Friday with Heidi blogs are on the website and can be accessed directly via the website anyway but I wanted you to know in advance.
This week I managed to get a seasonal photo worthy of sharing.
A colourful autumn view that I am lucky to see each day.
