Friday with Heidi: Holidays and habits…
Shall we talk about the heat?
I know, you know it’s been hot and so I’ll just refer to the fact that we’ve been working on keeping habits in place this week, not breaking records.
One of my favourite sayings is about consistency over perfection.
If we can remember this then the wheels of health, wellness and weight loss roll way more easily, and less riddled with guilt, when life throws a curve ball like 36 degree heat.
And, as we approach a busy holiday time, I thought I’d share something with you that dawned on me in November last year when I was taking a week away in Scotland.
We were self-catering and so by most standards we were running our day much the same as we would if we were at home. However I noticed that the opportunity to change habits is hugely improved when away from home.
I noticed that on holiday adopting something new and consistently is way easier in a new place without distractions and we’re less hard on ourselves if we get it ‘wrong’ or imperfect.
If you have a three-coffees-before-you-can-speak-to-me habit, it’s very likely this will disappear on holiday as you’re sleeping better, feeling more rested and not having to rush in the morning and grabbing coffee on your way out the door.
If you normally skip breakfast and grab something from the petrol station or work canteen, chances are you’ll be eating breakfast each day and feeling like you have more energy for your day.
If you just don’t get enough sleep in the week you’re likely to find that getting enough hours in is, usually, way easier when you’ve got some down time.
So as you head off this summer decide where you’d like to make some changes and see how being in a new environment can do that for you.
Want to drink more water? Start each day with a big glass.
Want to walk more each day? Try a post dinner mooch each night.
Fancy taking time to read or draw or listen to music more? Now is your chance.
Using the change of environment offers an easier way to adopt new practices as it’s now all new, so doing something different doesn’t feel out of place.
That week in Scotland I re-established my love of cooking an evening meal that was more than a ‘chuck it all in and see what we’ve got’ offering.
I was able to do some meditation / reflection each morning as I get up earlier than Mr Strickers.
I got some reading done. I love to read, but when I feel torn in several directions it takes a back seat. In reality I need the reading to help me balance the pull of what to do next, so this was useful.
What might you want to change, add in, play with this summer? Use the time to practice consistency, not perfection. Then, like our campers this week, you’ll be ensuring that your little tiny actions soon become habits, that become embedded into your psyche that help you get to where you want to be without any interruptions.

Clean, Green Fit Camp
Last week I had the fabulous opportunity to meet with a local Wokingham Councillor who had offered to speak with me about how my Social Enterprise offerings could work in the Wokingham area.
It was a fabulous chat and I walked away with a lot of exciting themes and ideas that we can work on with and through the council.
There’s lots going on and I have pimped myself out and said ‘use me – here I am‘ for projects that FastTrack Fit Camp can get involved in. Let’s see how that goes!
Our trainer bins are nearly full for a second time! If you have any end of term shoes from your children or old sports shoes that you no longer wear or runners that have seen a better day, please let me know so we can share with you how to drop them off and keep them out of landfill.
Our BeeBomb purchases are taking off! I had this lovely (excited) picture from one of our (non-gardening) campers who bought a BeeBomb and created a flower bed especially for it!
Our next litter pick is on Sunday 11 August at Bearwood Recreation Ground, Winnersh at 09.45. Please come along to join us!
Waste Not Wednesday featured gluts of courgettes this week in our courgette and lemon drizzle cake recipe.
And finally, one last thing to remind you of…
Keep consistent 🙂
FastTrack Fit Camp is an outdoor fitness business with the focus on improving people on the inside so they feel good on the outside. In 2019 FastTrack Fit Camp became a Social Enterprise and committed to distribute a minimum of 50% of profits back to community environmental projects each year with the goal of helping our local citizens feel good whilst being outside too.
