This time last week I was in the final throes of preparation for the Welsh Weekender event.
If you cast your mind back a week there was a weather warning for South Wales and yes, we were in the path of storm Callum in all his glory.
His glory was a robust amount of wind and rain.
And for an outdoor weekend event this posed a few issues for us and our guests.
Karen and I managed to bend and adjust our timetable to suit where we could. We did have some very wet sessions, we also had some squashed sessions all squeezed up inside a barn space to keep dry. We made sure that if it was dry we did get outside to enjoy the space and we gave them time to themselves to do what they liked.
I think I can say that this event had the most laughter. The conversations were funny, the weather was funny (you couldn’t get miserable about it) and when one fine guest decided that it would be fun to go swimming, in the rain, in our clothes that was funny too.
Interestingly though about 8 weeks ago I only had two people who’d signed up. This was not going to make for a business-worthy weekend.
I couldn’t cancel because I was too far into the contract and so I had to focus on what I wanted this event to be.
- I wrote down (see blog post on writing it down!) what I wanted my outcome to be. I wanted it to be successful and profitable.
- I wrote down how I wanted to feel about it. I wanted to feel chuffed with the outcome (yes, I wrote the word ‘chuffed’)
- I wrote down when it was going to happen by. October this year.
And so each day I focused on this outcome, feeling and time-frame and slowly and surely the guests appeared. Not as I would have expected, but these things never turn out as you imagined. And we ended up with the perfect group.
We also learned that Karen and I are pretty good at a few things:
- Adaptability without panic.
- Flexibility with calmness.
- Thinking on our feet.
- Knowing that you get what you focus on, and our focus was to have a super weekend. Which we did. If we’d have purely focused on how bad the weather was we could have let it really ruin our two days.
So, what are you focusing on right now?
Is it how out of shape you are? Or how unfit you feel? Or is it that you feel full of energy? Or really happy with the day?
Whatever you think about will determine what else you experience. If you think everything always happens to you, it probably will. If you think you’re lucky, you will be.
I challenge you to focus on one thing this week that will change how you think about something that bothers you.
Let me know what it is and how you get on!
The Weekender was such a success I am already looking for a venue for next year.
The dates are 27-29 September 2019, I am expecting to find a location within 90 minutes drive of Wokingham for a two night stay, with outdoor exercise space, indoor space for workshops and seminars and full board.
Spaces will be limited to 15 people and I am taking preliminary deposits now to secure a place.
This will reserve you a place and is fully refundable if you decide that the location or dates are not for you. Anyone booking one of these places will get a priority on taking a place when the full details are announced and the deposit will be deducted from the price of the weekend.
To grab one of these 15 places you can pre-pay now and reserve your spot. It’s £50 per person and payable by Paypal.
Be quick! I already have a list of people who wanted to go this year but couldn’t make the dates or location, I also have 9 ladies who all wanted to come back again after this year’s experience.
