Friday with Heidi: What Melvyn Bragg said…

Yesterday we were in Leeds to see Sophie graduate.

It was the culmination of four years of work. Three in Leeds, one in Australia. Various jobs, multiple scripts to learn and stage directions to remember. A dissertation to complete with copious visits to Starbucks and a mass of new friends made.

A degree is a great reminder that you need to be a finisher to get the prize. There are no ‘that’s nearly done’ approaches to getting the gong. When the going gets tough and you really want to give up you still need to get it done to get what you set out to achieve.

The ceremony was hosted by the Chancellor of University of Leeds, Melvyn Bragg and he gave a nice summary once they’d all done their bit on stage.

He told them they’d done a great a thing in completing their degrees, but they didn’t need to rush the next bit. He encouraged them to take their time and do something that they really wanted to do, to do something that made them happy and for fun before jumping into what they think they ‘should’ do now the degree is over.

It’s a great lesson for all of us.
